Steam Locomotive BR 10 2-3-1

The two locomotives 10 001 and 10 002, formed the Baureihe (class designation) 10 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, they were designed to haul heavy long distance  passenger trains. The intention was to proceed with the development of this new type of engine, as a the replacement for the Steam Locomotives BR 01 and BR 03 but this did not happen because in the meantime further development of other systems of traction stepped in. The steam generator (boiler) was derived directly from the type already adopted on the Baureihe 01 in the 1953 version which offered better performance and  to reduced  aerodynamic resistance of the locomotives they were fitted with partial streamlining. As there two Locos are experimental prototypes. The dual fuel possibilities also led to significant particularities:

10 001  entered service with capabilities to run under either coal operation  or Fuel Oil.  For the loading of coal, which was finely grained, the tender was fitted with special equipment, operated by a steam engine, and his bunker was closed off by doors, in other words, the coal was not in sight, thus not exposed to the elements like in the normal tenders in use. The ability to also burn oil, on the 10001, was not intended to gain increased  power, but the need to obtain higher production of steam. Aesthetic features of this locomotive was previously limited only to the red coloring  housing the buffers and ladders accessing the cabin. There are three control rods running from the cabin to the left front of the boiler.

The 10 002 001  entered service with capability of running  exclusively on fuel oil,  therefore its tender was equipped to store only liquid  fuel.  The tenders of both Locos, different from each other to accommodate the different fuel requirement, were built as self supporting  structure  thus without chassis.

For this second machine aesthetic features worth denoting were: red coloring housing the buffers , some parts of the partial stream lining, the cab access ladders were red only at the lower protruding from the streamlining.

Five are the control rods and pipes which are the longitudinal elements present on the left side of the boiler, running up to the cabin.

Rivarossi  reproduced the  models of both prototypes and  took care, with scrupulous thoroughness, in ensuring the aesthetic differences that distinguished them.
