Steam Locomotive "Mikado" Type
141R SNCF
The 141R Mikado’s were actually commissioned in
1944 during WW2 by the French Liberation Forces, as the “Liberation” Class, to
the American and Canadian industries, which were building similar engines for
the US Army Transportation Corps and for the British War Department. They were
meant to work the trains in the post-war period, at a time when most of the
motive power was out of order. There were variants, depending on the firing of
the boiler- coal-fired or oil-fired, wheels format- spoked or boxpok, livery -
full black or dark green with red lining. A total of 1340 were built by the
various companies Lima, Alco, Baldwin, Montreal Loco Works, Canadian Loco Works.
